In the State of California a Uniform Guard is required by the State to complete 40 hours of training in the first year and submit an application with finger prints to have a background check completed before they can Guard any location. In addition, they are required to complete an additional 8 hours of training each year. To become a Loss Prevention Detective in California, requires NO training, background check or annual re-training. I was able to exchange emails with a member of the State's governing body (BSIS) and when I asked the question why there was no required training for Detectives he kept telling me the requirements to become a Uniform Guard. In my opinion, he did not understand the difference in the positions.
This is the same story in many States. The Loss Prevention Detective position is unregulated even though they detain individuals for shoplifting, often use handcuffs, testify in court and respond to emergencies that occur in the stores.
On a regular basis, articles relating to conduct by Detectives resulting in death to individuals are hitting the internet. I'm confident States will eventually wake up and require training and background checks for this position.
This is one of the reasons I created an on line training for Loss Prevention Detectives. You can see the training at http://www.lpdetective.com/. On Monday I will discuss the retailers obligation to step up here.
Enjoy the day...
